Trip Of A Lifetime In Africa Diary - Ryan Hughes by Swazi

People kept saying what horns or skins would look nice, I just commented on whether or not it looked good to eat! Started to creep them out I think...

Day 1: We went out on our first hunt today, saw some Springbok, Jackal, Oryx, Kudu, Zebra, Cliffspringer, Turtles (in what little water there was), Ostrich, Impala and Giraffe! People kept saying what horns or skins would look nice, I just commented on whether or not it looked good to eat! Started to creep them out I think...

Gerret, our hunting guide, is pretty cool. Very German, very nice guy - not really used to N.Z humour. But he's getting there. Not really fair on him when me and Dad decide to team up and trick him - imagine a room with two versions of me in it! He doesn't know I speak a little German yet, so I'm keeping tabs on him from time to time. LOL

Day 2: Man it's hot! Everyone is asleep so I guess it's up to me to look out for beasties. Oh man, Gerret is asleep and I just saw a bug crawl into his mouth! HAHAHA.

Ryan writes and talks like he has not had a lot of experience in hunting and shooting but his results says otherwise. Well done Ryan, I am very jealous.

It was the best of hunts. It was the worst of hunts. Some days I wondered what the hell I was even doing here and yet other days I simply marvelled at the experience I was having in this part of the world

  • Blow Pipe Hunting - Part 2

    28th of March, 2012

We were all dead still, I moved in millimetres and only whilst filming, never raising our white faces to the sky. We hardly breathed. The leaf matter crunched under any movement, so we just froze. It\'s a sickening thing to scare off a Deer or a Tahr.

When we were first developing the idea of making a show about the world\'s last traditional hunters, the hunt that was first on my list was blowpipe hunting.

The presenter and I are hanging 15 yards back. Both experienced hunters and physically very fit, both totally out of our league as these jungle athletes spring from fallen log to thorny palm trunk, without making a sound, and in one fluid movement.
